Training: Sex, Safety & Respect: educators train the trainer

Skip to main content

This workshop is an adaptation of the highly successful Sex & Ethics program, developed for a tertiary context. Staff learn to deliver the course 'Understanding consent and preventing sexual violence in universities'. This training also includes two-year licensing.

Sex, Safety & Respect brings together research and practice on sexuality and violence prevention education.

Researched and created by Professor Moira Carmody, the program focuses on showing how the challenges faced by young people negotiating their sexual lives can be addressed by a six session interactive program.

“I developed an alternative approach to sexual assault prevention based on building the knowledge and skills of young people. The program is sex positive and encourages young people to make ethical decisions about if, when and with whom they are sexual.” - Professor Moira Carmody

Sex, Safety & Respect educator training for Australian universities reflects the latest refinements of the Sex & Ethics Program and sexual violence prevention education specifically targeting university contexts. It incorporates findings from research and training conducted by us within universities and other settings and locates it within best practice international research.

This program resulted from a collaboration between Full Stop Australia and the Hunting Ground Australia Project. It builds on a long-standing partnership between Full Stop Australia and Professor Moira Carmody, a national expert in primary prevention. Together we developed the Sex & Ethics violence prevention program for young people.

This comprehensive four-day training program is designed to support university staff in becoming skilled educators and provide short training workshops for students.

Attendance is required at face-to-face workshops over a four-day block (or two, two-day blocks). It can be tailored specifically to the needs of an individual university or can involve staff from multiple universities.

The program content is based on an adaptation of the highly successful Sex & Ethics program which has been run across Australia and New Zealand since 2007. It has been tailored to address the particular needs of university students from diverse cultures, and to address sexual consent and relationships.

Educators participate in all activities of the Sex & Ethics Program to understand their own ethical stance and the skills they need to effectively deliver the program to diverse students.

In this workshop, participants will learn about:

  • Diverse views about sexuality and gender including culture and faith;
  • The Sex & Ethics framework for decision making;
  • Understanding other people's desires and needs - skills in verbal and non-verbal communication;
  • Skills in ethical consent in casual and ongoing relationships;
  • Ethical use of social media;
  • Competing desires in relationships;
  • Standing up against sexual violence as an ethical bystander.

In addition, educators are provided with 'in the moment' training tips and opportunities to practice delivery skills.

On completion of the program staff may be able to deliver the three-hour Understanding sexual consent & preventing sexual violence in universities program for student leaders.

Staff who successfully complete this program will participate in the program's Quality Assurance Plan and will be licensed to offer the program for two years within their institution.
